I can teach whatever I choose, but unless the students choose to learn, it will be in vain. Hence I believe that the focus be must be upon learning and not teaching. To most, motivation and interest are necessary for learning and with motivated students, pretty much anything is possible. The necessary motivation can be ”created” in several ways. Obviously relevant examination and grading is important, but more so is putting the knowledge in a context, and creating a percieved value in the course contents.

To accomplish the above, new knowledge must be related to knowledge the students already have. An island of knowledge is useless unless there is a bridge to it. If this bridge exists, and the application of the skill is obvious and/or needed, motivation comes so much easier. The capability to put one self in the students shoes and see the world from their perspective makes this very process so much easier.

Even more important than the actual knowledge gained – at least for the last years of the master program – is that the students really learn to learn. I think that we – the teachers and supervisors – have a huge responsibility there. It is we who will create the expectations and act as a good example. It is tempting to take the easy way out, but showing the answer or the solution is seldom the right thing to do. What we need to focus on is to learn the students how to figure out where to start looking for the solution and what information is required to be able to start the problem solving process.

Generally, students at KTH have typically only a very limited knowledge of ethics, morals, philosophy, science history, and the associated responsibility that we as engineers and fellow humans have. Because of this, many student have a hard time understanding and appreciating what technology really means and how it affects society as a whole. We – the engineers –  are part in the creation of the future. The choices we do, the engineering knowledge, designs, applications, and solutions we create will have a major influence on where the world will go. It is my opinion, that there is room in the curriculum to address some of these issues. I believe that would create even better engineers.

We should make sure that the students that get their exams are truly proud to be engineers. If we succeed in doing this, we can be proud to be part of the system that makes that happen.

This won’t work for all factory Renault stereos, but it will for some. I’ve got an old Megane with the ”Update List” main unit. There is the fancy way, which is required if you want the stalk adapter to control the iPod.

But there is a simple alternative that will give you an aux input (3.5 mm stereo jack plug) in which you can connect any smartphone, iPod or whatever. The schematics are available on the internet, but bying the parts can be costly and/hard to find. Luckily in this day and age, you can find exactly what you want with some luck.

I got my cable for €16 from this site. From order to delivery in a little more than a week without any problems. Thank you! But they’re also on e-bay (search for MP3 lead for renault update list radio)

Then remove the main unit (using four precision screwdrivers or whatever in the holes) and plug the connector in. You don’t even have to disconnect the unit. Make sure the AUX input is enabled in the expert settings.

I drilled two holes in the ”pocket” below the unit. One large in which I could pull the cable and one small. A zip-tie through the two holes fix the cable to avoid pulling directly on the connector. The holes are hidden so it looks great and my aux input is now easily accessible.

Alltså införskaffades ett 3-abbonemang (89 kr/mån) och ett Huawei E122 (200 kr) utan bindningstid för att testa. Det tillkom  150 kr i någon jamsig startavgift. Dock var 2 Gb alldeles för lite men för 199 kr/mån får man 20 Gb och det ska ju räcka. Vill man kan man då oxå surfa i 16 Mbit/s, men det kräver ett annat modem. Vill man inte vara trafikbegränsad så kan man ha Telenors 6Mbit/s istället.

För att slippa en dongel, dra igång internet manuellt och få lite ordning på nätverket hemma så införskaffades dessutom en 3G-router för 339 kr.

Nu alltså drygt halva månadskostnaden och ungefär samma bandbredd: 5,6 Mbit/s ner och 1,3 Mbit/s upp med modemet i källaren. Jag räknar lätt hem investeringen (knappt 700 kr inklusive router) på några månader. Wii!

• Command (runsten/äpple) – F2 tar dig ju till menyn längst upp på skärmen. Men sedan kan man trycka till exempel F för att komma till Fönstermenyn eller B för att komma till bokmärken. Börjar en till meny på F så tar dig Fö till fönstermenyn.
• I systeminställningar kan man lägga till egna kortkommandon. Ett kortkommando jag saknat rätt mycket är det för klistra in special i diverse Microsoftprogram. Klicka vidare (via cmd-F2 nu) till Systeminställningar->Tangentbord och mus->Kortkommandon och lägg till kortkommandona du saknar. Tänk på att du måste använda exakt rätt bokstäver. Jag har mappat cmd-alt-shift-v till ”Klistra in special…” i alla mina program nu. Trevligt.
